In 2008, Sayville Varsity and Junior Varsity volleyball teams participated in Dig Pink, the national fundraising effort for Breast Cancer Awareness, organized by The Side-Out Foundation and Suffolk County Girls Volleyball.
“It has grown since then,” said Volleyball Coach Debbie Urso, “and has really become a great tradition. All of Suffolk County Volleyball gets together and designates a scheduled match for this week to run a DIG PINK, so we can all participate; Some years you are the home match, and some you are away. We are going to Rocky Point on the 21st when they host one at their school.”
The recent game with Bellport on Sayville’s home court was a success. “Our record is now 8-2 for the season,”Coach Urso stated, adding that the team “played well together.”
Coach Urso expressed her appreciation for the “players’ families who pitched in to help with the fundraisers and the community that came out to show their support. Sayville Senior Alexis Skalkowski came down and did a great job singing the national anthem.”
Coach Urso added. “Anyone who would like to still make a donation, can log on to the Side-out Foundation Dig Pink website and donate online...”
While the total count was not complete at press time, Coach Urso estimated donations so far totaled around $500.
