Collective and Cool on the Ice

  • Collective and Cool as Ice,

    Sayville School Music Groups

Perform at the Islanders Home Game

Sayville's award-winning music program (six-year winner of the Best Communities for Music Education and a two-time recipient of the Grammy Signature School Awards) may have had nothing to do with it.

The Islanders traditionally ask specific schools on a list to perform during the pregame and intermissions at the Coliseum for the Islander home games. However, Sayville had a spot on that list for good reason. With such a musical talent pool, nurtured by an amazing music faculty, which has given Sayville a golden reputation for excellence in music, the performing groups remained professionally cool on the ice as Islander fan fever built in anticipation.

Opening the evening, the Sayville Jazz Choir Director Jeff Hoffman led the members of his Jazz Choir in The Star Spangled Banner and O Canada, while High School Band Director Peter DeSalvo (an avid Islander fan) conducted God Bless America at the first intermission.  During the second intermission, select elementary students from Cherry, Lincoln, and Sunrise choirs performed America the Beautiful.

Congratulations, Sayville music students and department. For those of us who could attend the game, you were the icing on the cake!
