Sunrise Collects For African Library

  • Every Child Needs a Book

    The African Library Project.

Sharing their love for books across the globe, the Sunrise Drive Student Council organized a book collection for the African Library Project.

Peace Corp Volunteer Tricia Smallwood, a former Sayville Middle School and High School Graduate, as well as a Prince Of Peace student, remembered her hometown when enlisting the aid of a caring community for this effort, and she was not disappointed by the response of the current Sunrise Drive students.

The students worked hard collecting, counting, sorting, writing letters, and making bookmarks, as they followed both their motto “every child needs a book”  and their hearts, surpassing their original goal of 1,000 books. After collecting over 1,500 new or gently-used books, the student packaged and shipped them to the Lesotho, South Africa. Once they arrive at their destination, the books will be set up in a building that will become the community’s only, new library.
