Observing Women’s History Month in March, Veteran Gary Vertichio and Chris Bodkin were among the visitors in Mrs. Sue Hart’s Participation in Government classes to recognize one of Sayville’s own: Florence Evans, a Sayville graduate, who was a volunteer nurse in WWII and spent most of her military service on the frontlines treating the wounded. She was killed in France on the last day of the War. A monument (in a park behind Crickets in Sayville) honoring her was recently rededicated.
