Lincoln Students Discover the Explorers

Mr. Dragotta’s Fifth-grade students brought history to life with their biographical reports.

Researching the “famous and sometimes infamous” Spanish Explorers and Conquistadors of "The New World,” the students became experts in their historical figures. Learning to differentiate between facts and myths about the legendary Hernando Cortes, Ferdinand Magellan, Hernando De Soto, Alvar Nunez Cabeza De Vaca, Juan Ponce De Leon, Vasco Nunez De Balboa, and Francisco Coronado helped the students understand the impact that the  Spanish explorers had on the cultures already in the new world.

Upon completion of their projects, the Fifth-graders showcased their well-earned knowledge by creating “various presentations” in “a variety of styles and techniques,” Mr. Dragotta explained, “such as narrators, outlines, reenactments, props, music, maps, illustrations, and enthusiasm, to name a few.”

After doing such an impressive job of research, perhaps the biggest discovery the Fifth-graders made was that history is interesting, especially when it comes alive.
