Try solving this equation:  One fourteen-hour competition times 531 high schools + 20 pages of research on the US Census = ?.

For the Sayville High School’s Moody Math Challenge Team, the correct answer worked out to $1000.

Two teams from Sayville competed for this award against 530 other teams from around the Northeast. The team, led by Douglas Kenny with members Julie MacDonnell, Cynthia Cheng, Conrad Volle, and Ryan Burgan, won an honorable mention, ( a designation awarded to only the top 7% of teams that competed) and  a prize of $1000 for college expenses.

Moody’s Mega Math Challenge is an Internet-based math competition open to high school juniors and seniors living in the 18 states along the East Coast. It spotlights applied mathematics as a powerful problem-solving tool, as a viable and exciting profession, and as a vital contributor to advances in an increasingly technical society.

Although exhausted from their efforts, the team admitted that they had enjoyed the experience. “It was a very challenging project that was very rewarding,” Doug Kenny remarked, “but we’re in no hurry to do that again!”

Team Advisor Chris Surrusco commended all the students who participated for their wonderful accomplishments and congratulated the team, adding:  “we are very proud of you!”
