Middle School Band

  • Practicing what they preach

Sayville Middle School band students turned their music practice into dollars with a Practice-a-thon fundraiser.

The Middle School students raised money by obtaining commitments from donors who agreed to pay the students for each minute of practice on their instruments. Not only did the students improve their musical skills, but they raised a total of $1,606.89 for Long Island Cares, Inc. - The Harry Chapin Food Bank.

"Founded in 1980 by the late singer, songwriter and social activist, Harry Chapin, this nonprofit organization provides nutritional food and support services for a network of more than 540 community-based member agencies including food pantries, soup kitchens, emergency shelters, child care programs, disability organizations, veterans services and more. "

Representing Long Island Cares, Robin Amato, director of development, visited the Middle School and thanked band directors Mrs. Keri Van Boxel, Ms. Kim Grizzaffi, and the students during morning band practice for their devotion to music. Ms. Amato was especially impressed by the unprecedented amount raised by students for the food bank.
