ON A ROLL WITH CIGAR-BOX GUITARS
Seventh-grade students in Mr. Jim McLoughlin’s technology classes combined craft with creativity to make functional cigar-box guitars.
Gaining historical significance through the coordinated lessons in General Music and Technology classes, the students used the interactive Whiteboards to learn the histories of music, African American culture, and technology. With materials donated by Lowes Home Improvement center in East Patchogue, Old World Moldings in Holbrook, and Jim's Smoke Shop in Patchogue, the students constructed the guitars in Mr. McLoughlin’s classes and learned to play in Dr. Morgo’s.
Not only were the student-built cigar-box guitars successfully featured in a concert at the Boultan Center by local musician Jack Licitra, twenty-two students gave an amazing performance on stage with Dr. Morgo’s Eighth-grade orchestra at the Middle School Spring concert.
