Recognizing Hall of Fame Athletes

  • The Second Annual Athletic Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony not only coincided with the exciting Homecoming Weekend events, but also with the completion of the Hall of Fame display case in the gym lobby. With the opportunity to socialize before the proceedings, this year’s selection of guests, comprising past Sayville student athletes, coaches, and faithful community members, were able to admire the plaques already on display.

During the delicious brunch provided by Parkville Deli, Athletic Director Charles M. Delargy welcomed the inductees and their families. Last year was the start of a dream,” Mr. Delargy explained, “to have an Athletic Hall of Fame that recognizes our great tradition. Now, with the induction of this second class, that dream is better than I ever could have imagined!” Mr. Delargy also acknowledged the tremendous efforts of the Sayville Athletic Foundation and the Hall of Fame Committee along with the support of  the Sayville Board of Education, Central Office, and building-level administrative staff, without whom the Hall of Fame would not have been possible.

This year the Ceremony honored fifteen individual inductees and an entire family (see below) for their exemplary contributions worthy of permanent recognition in the Hall of Fame. As the inductees were called forward individually, the ever-eloquent Donald MacKenzie, Girls Track coach and retired Lincoln Avenue teacher, enumerated their qualifying achievements. Each inductee was then presented with a plaque as the audience rose to a standing ovation and gave rousing applause.

Congratulations to the 2007 Athletic Hall of Fame inductees: Michael Mussler, Larry Kane, Jennifer Jenkins Powers, George Benedict, Jim Heyman, James Cisek, Jon B. Nelson Jr., Harold Leslie, James Pamlanye, James S. Hazen, Jason Mastropierro, Gil D'Andrea Jr., Richard Cestaro, Phil DePompeo, Kathryn Graham Case, Dave Hait, and the Hazen Family
