Sayville Varsity Cheerleaders “POP” With Great Expectations

With the “Power of Positivity” (POP) as their motto, the Sayville Varsity cheerleaders have vaulted their way to amazing achievements.

“Our goal this year was for our team to continually improve at each competition,” explained Coach Stephanie Flynn who has been the cheerleading coach for sixteen years.  She shares her excitement with her second-year coach, Kaytie Ferremi. “We focus on beating our best selves each week and being positive.”

Towards this end, the Sayville cheerleaders took their drilling and determination to another level; the team worked closely with Long Island Cheerleading Coach and Choreographer John Thompson in Ronkonkoma this year. “The athletes have practice at this gym twice a week where we work in conjunction with Coach John Thompson on tumbling skills and perfecting their routines”—routines described as being between “elite” and “super-elite” in difficulty.  The team incorporated the most standing and running-tumbling moves in the history of Sayville Cheerleading.  “It is also the most difficult routine that this program has ever had,” the coaches stated, while agreeing that, “our success and closeness as a team wouldn’t have been possible without Long Island Cheerleading.”

  • Their training and positive attitude yielded consistent results in this competition season; recently, the Sayville Varsity Cheerleaders team—led by Team Captains Laura Eichele, Amanda Passin, Jaden Sconzo, and Samantha Yost and comprised of eight Seniors, seven Juniors, two Sophomores and one Freshman—placed Sixteenth out of more than sixty teams in the Small, Division II at the National High School Cheerleading Championship held in Orlando.  Six days later, they finished Second at the County Championship which put them at the top of the Division II Bracket, qualifying them to represent Section XI at the State Championships to be held March 2nd at RIT, Rochester, New York.

  • Coaches Flynn and Ferremi are heartened by the squad’s energy and enthusiasm. “Our long-term goals were to make it to finals at Nationals… we are thrilled that they were able to accomplish that amazing feat and to perform their best at the County Championships.  Earning the privilege to represent Section XI at States has been an added bonus.  This will be such a great experience for this team,” added Flynn.

The proof is in their successful season. Keeping POP in focus has improved these athletes in body, mind, and spirit. “Every day we break on this motto to help remind us how far positivity can bring us as a team and help us achieve our goals.”

Whatever the results might be in future competitions, the Sayville Varsity Cheerleaders have already taken great strides proving the power of positivity. Congratulations!
