COACH CAMERON REPORTED:
“On February 21, the Sayville-Bayport- Blue Point Swim Team closed out their season by competing in the Suffolk County Championship Meet. After finishing the dual meet season, as Co-Champions of League 2, members of the team proceeded to swim against the best competitors in Suffolk County. Three Sayville High School team members, sophomore Brendan Cameron, senior Colin Caraher and senior Shayan Yajadda competed at the County Championship. In the past this meet has determined who would represent section XI (Suffolk County) at the State Championship Meet, but to the dismay of many there would be no state meet this year. Both Colin and Shayan have attended the State Championship Meet as members of a relay, but it was their hope to return to the state meet competing in an individual event.
“On day one of the meet, Sayville swimmers participated in three relays. Brendan Cameron, attending his first county championship, led off swimming the backstroke leg of the 200 medley relay in 29.47secs followed by Shayan Yajadda swimming breaststroke in 27.14 and Colin Caraher swimming the butterfly leg in 23.94. Both Shayan and Colin set the fastest times in the meet for their legs of the relay. The relay finished 6th overall with the help of Aidan Cameron from Bayport. In the 200 freestyle relay the only Sayville swimmer was Brendan Cameron who swam his 50 m leg in a personal best time of 24.87sec. In the final relay of the day, Colin Caraher led off the relay with a personal best 100 freestyle time of 48.63 - the 4th fastest 100 time in the meet. Shayan swam his leg in 55.15 secs and the relay finished 8th overall.
“On Sunday, Colin Caraher went on to swim two individual events, the 200 individual medley and the 100 fly. After posting a time of 2:07.90 in the 200 IM at the League Championship Meet, one week prior, Colin swam a personal best of 2:01.61 beating that time by over 6 seconds finishing 6th in the county finals. After his success in the 200 IM, Colin readied himself for the 100 Fly. Colin swam the first 50 yards of the race faster than anyone in the meet and once again beat his top time in this event by almost 4 seconds finishing with a state meet qualifying time of 53.83 for third place.
“Shayan also posted two personal best times on Sunday. The first in the 50 Freestyle where he finished in a time of 23.04 secs for a fifth place finish. In his second event, the 100 breaststroke, Shayan’s specialty, he did not disappoint. Shayan led the race at the 50 mark with the fastest split of the meet, finishing in third place at a time of 59.78 seconds. Reaching his season goal of finishing in under one minute, this time qualified him for the state meet.
These boys worked hard all season and it was gratifying to see them have such great success at the county meet. Good luck to all of our seniors in the future. They will be greatly missed next year.”
