One Fourth Grader in Sayville channeled his inner scientist over a common problem shared by many children across Long Island when schools reopened with COVID-19 social-distancing restrictions. For his Science Fair project, entitled Shhhh… I Can’t Hear, Sunrise Drive Fourth Grader Matthew Mercorella was inspired by real-life, sound-proofing difficulties he experienced in repurposed classrooms during the pandemic.

“The purpose of this experiment is to find out the best material to block out unwanted noise. I will compare which material has the best results to block out unwanted noise. I became interested in this idea because of the location of my classroom this year. Two classes are presently sharing space in the gym and only separated by a divider. There are times that I am able to hear what is going on in the other classroom space. I designed this experiment to test some materials to find out what would be a better solution to block out the unwanted noise.”

Congratulations, Matthew, for using your struggle as inspiration to earn this award.
