After a one-day delay due to inclement weather, the 3rd Annual Sayville S.T.R.I.D.E.S. Color Mile Run/Walk took place on Sunday, October 1, at Sayville Middle School.

The outdoor event involved physical activity for the participants—a mile-long run around the Middle School fields while being bombarded by non-toxic colored corn starch—to highlight three S.T.R.I.D.E.S. characteristics: self-esteem, resilience and strength.

Participants were encouraged to wear white for the run so that when they reached the finish line, they were covered in a rainbow of all of the colors they had run through.

“Despite the change of date because of the rain on Saturday, we still had a great crowd come out and enjoy a beautiful Sunday morning at the Sayville Middle School field,” Assistant Superintendent for Pupil Personnel Services, Mrs. Jillian Makris said. “We loved seeing our families and all of the smiling faces of the students and staff and we are proud to continue this tradition to kick off each school year and we look forward to next year's event."

So many helped to make the S.T.R.I.D.E.S. Color Mile Run/Walk a success. Tremendous support in the forms of funds, fare, a reassuring presence, or trinkets to make the day memorable were thanks to Islip Goes Purple, the Great South Bay Coalition, Youth Enrichment Services, Same Here Organization, Sayville SEPTA, the Suffolk County Police Department and Community Ambulance. The event would also not be possible without the student volunteers from clubs and extracurriculars as well as the Sayville Middle School Cheerleaders and Coach Bailey.

In addition, Mrs. Makris appreciated the “total team effort” from Sayville’s security staff, buildings and grounds and custodial staff.

Mrs. Makris would like to give a special shout out to Mrs. Jessica Ciardullo, Districtwide Social Worker who was instrumental in organizing, setting up and running the event.
