Sophomore and Professional Cellist

  • Sayville Sophomore’s Passion for Music

Leads to Professional Venues as Cellist

Nicholas Burkel is a talented Sayville High School Sophomore who has accomplished so much as a musician at such a young age. Nick sits first chair cellist in the Sayville Select Orchestra, is a cellist in a professional string quartet, and is currently attending Manhattan School of Music prep school.

“Nick was already on our radar in the Middle School when it was apparent that he loved the cello and performing in orchestra,” remarked Sayville Music Chairperson Jeff Hoffman. “His passion for the instrument and music in general is such a beautiful thing to see. He has continued to excel in the high school and he is beginning to be noticed outside of school as well.”

“Last year, Mr. Hoffman continued, “Nick started studying at the Manhattan School of Music preparatory division and has grown into an exceptional musician even though he is a ‘mere’ sophomore! This summer, Nick became involved with a string quartet comprised of other students at the Manhattan School and they have been turning heads ever since their inception. This year alone, they were featured in The New York Times, and twice in the New Yorker magazine with a full color picture! They will be coached by the internationally renowned Kronos String Quartet which plays all the major concert halls in the world, and then they will perform with the quartet in Carnegie Hall.”

Nick’s achievements include playing in major NYC venues and performing live on radio stations.

“As you can see Nick’s passion for his cello and his work ethic,” Mr. Hoffman concluded, “have led him to very amazing opportunities at such a ripe bold age. We in the music department are so proud of his accomplishments thus far, and can’t wait to see what the world has in store for him in the future.”
