After the processional was played by the Sayville High School Band and directed for the last time by retiring Pete DeSalvo, The Star-Spangled Banner officially opened the commencement. The beautifully blended voices of Senior members of the High School Jazz Choir Kiera Muscara, Kailey Schnurman, and Miles Whittaker, along with Junior Liam Hoffmeister, provided a moving rendition of the National Anthem. The Seniors also closed with God Bless America, accompanied by the High School Band.
Introduced as “a very special individual, an outstanding All-State bassoonist, President of Tri-M, and a sensational member of Sayville’s Theatre Arts program,” Mr. Hoffer announced that Kailey Schnurmen (left) was The Patricia Ann Kubelle Memorial Award Winner.
Standing at the microphone, Kailey was sheathed in a gold robe and glimmering sunshine, but it was her golden voice that hushed the crowds. Throughout her entire performance of the pop-style work Whenever You Remember by award-winning and prolific composer/writer Diane Warren, Kailey demonstrated her “amazing” talents, sustaining impressive musicality and emotional power. Swelling applause thundered approval.
