Reading for Good Character

  • Reading Into Good Character

An educational initiative that was developed by the Sayville Rotary Club has linked good character with a love for reading. To kick off the ongoing Character Education program at Cherry Avenue Elementary School this year, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Walter Schartner sat down with the Second Graders to read Is there Really a Human Race? by Jamie Lee Curtis and illustrated by Laura Cornell. The students enjoyed listening to Dr. Schartner, who is also a  Sayville Rotary International member, read aloud the questions of the child who wonders: “Is there really a human race? Is it going on now all over the place? When did it start? Who said, "Ready, Set, Go"? Did it start on my birthday? …I really must know.”

A part of this literacy program that is sponsored and run by the Sayville Rotary Club, members of the Rotary Club will come each week to read books that revolve around building good character.
