Board Of Education Roles, Responsibilities, and Expectations
Our Board of Education is comprised of seven volunteers elected by Sayville residents to serve the best interests of our students and the Sayville community at large. We meet two times a month to conduct school business, relying on the Superintendent of Schools to manage the day-to-day operations of the district.
Our Responsibilities include:

Reviewing, developing and setting district policies.

Hiring and supervising the Superintendent of Schools.

Collaborating with the Superintendent of Schools to develop a district vision and strategic plan.

Setting annual attainable, measurable goals for the school district to achieve.
-
Participating in budget development and approving/adopting the school budget.

Serving as liaisons to the community.
-
Approving or not approving recommendations from the Superintendent of Schools.
What you can expect from us:

We will make decisions in the best interest of our students while being mindful of district finances.

We will make data-based decisions.
-
We will communicate with the community when issues arise and be as transparent with the community as allowable by New York State (NYS) laws and regulations.

We will be available to listen to community members at our two monthly BOE meetings during public comment sessions or in a more private venue via email.
The Responsibilities of our Superintendent of Schools include:

Managing the day-to-day operations of the school district.
-
Communicating effectively with the BOE and community at large.
-
Collaborating with administration and staff to ensure positive, caring, and supportive learning experiences occur for all members of our learning community.

Carrying out Board Goals and enforcing district policy.
-
Developing and executing the strategic plan to ensure that our vision becomes a reality.

Supervising/overseeing all faculty and staff.
-
Making recommendations to the Board of Education on policy, staffing decisions, or other decisions related to the successful operations of our school district.
What we expect from our Superintendent and Admin Team:

Student centered, data informed decision making.

Clear, concise, and timely communication.

Collaborative, supportive relationships with families, students, and staff.

Leadership that moves the district forward in its annual goals and expectations.

The development of a fiscally responsible budget that supports student learning.

Effective management of the district that holds staff accountable for high quality learning experiences that demonstrate or model a CARING school environment focused on high quality student LEARNING.

Integrity, honesty, and transparency.
In addition, we expect that all Teachers and Staff will:

Create a safe learning environment where all students feel valued and supported.

Hold students accountable to do their best work by aiming for the districts desired student outcomes to become:

Communicate effectively, partnering with parents to support student learning.

Teach students using research based best instructional practices.

Teach the curriculum as developed by NYS and the Sayville School District.

Focus work on CARING about students and supporting the LEARNING of all students.

Follow and implement curriculum maps and instructional strategies as directed by the district, BOE, or State Education Department.

Ensure a least restrictive learning environment, one which promotes inclusivity for all students.

Always maintain student and family privacy.
What we expect from our families:

Communicate your concerns using the Sayville Communication Guide provided to all families. If problems or concerns persist, work through the chain of command in any given area. Following this protocol, your concerns will be addressed. Quickly and efficiently. If this does not occur, contact the Superintendent of Schools and then our Board of Education.

Partner with the district in solving problems or initiating positive change for the district.

Join our parent organizations, volunteer, communicate often, and vote in our local elections.

Gather information from reliable sources so you can make informed decisions.

Be respectful in your interactions with staff, students, and other families.
