Introducing Dr. Marc Ferris

Sayville Public Schools has appointed Dr. Marc Ferris to be the next Superintendent of Schools, effective October 1, 2022. Dr. Ferris will be serving as Deputy Superintendent during a three-month transition period starting on July 5th.

Dr. Ferris received his Doctorate from Hofstra University in 2010, where he focused his studies on the development of caring learning communities and their impact on student learning and social emotional well-being.  He continued on at Hofstra in 2011 as an adjunct professor, teaching and preparing aspiring school administrators for leadership roles throughout Long Island. He holds two masters’ degrees from New York University and graduated from Washington and Jefferson College in 1996 prior to starting his teaching career as a Social Studies teacher at H. Frank Carey High School, in western Nassau County. When asked about his teaching experiences, Dr. Ferris commented, “As a teacher, it was always important to me that every single student in my class felt cared for, valued, and empowered to grow and learn.  That is still the core of who I am and the heart and soul of every action I take as an educator and school leader today.”

From 2002-2016, Dr. Ferris served as assistant principal (2002-2004) and then principal (2005-2016) of North Shore Middle School in Glen Head New York.  His school was nationally recognized by New York State and then Nationally as a School to Watch in 2015 and Dr. Ferris was recognized by the Council for Administrators and Supervisors as Middle School Principal of the year in 2016.

During the summer of 2016, Dr. Ferris was one of four educators in the nation invited to Washington D.C. to speak at a United States Senate Briefing on Education.  During his time with the Senate, he focused on the importance of strong academic programing aligned with appropriate social emotional learning support for students.  Over the past five years, Dr. Ferris served as Assistant Superintendent for Instruction in the Wantagh School District where he worked closely with the Superintendent of Schools, leading and managing all aspects of the School District.

When asked about his appointment in Sayville, Dr. Ferris responded, “Sayville is a stunning school community, a dream opportunity for me, and I am absolutely thrilled to be serving the students, families and staff members of this district.  The past two years have been challenging for school districts across the nation and now is the time to heal, find joy in our work together, and move forward for the good of our children and our community.”

“This is a very big moment for Sayville,” remarked Board President John Verdone on behalf of his fellow Board members and the Sayville Focus Group involved in the search process to select Dr. Ferris. “Welcome, Dr. Ferris, and congratulations!”
