National Anthem 

The National Anthem was performed on the saxophone by All-State Jazz Ensemble member and Sayville High School student Brandan Mazzullo.

SHS student Brandan Mazzullo played the National Anthem.

 

 

 

Fred Langstaff Recognized 

Fred Langstaff was honored with a Resolution from the BOE.

Former Sayville Board of Education President Fred Langstaff was recognized with a Resolution from the Board of Education. Mr. Langstaff passed away on August 7, 2023. He served the school district for nine years, from 1980 to 1989, and served as President for one year. 

“Fred was a tireless, outspoken advocate for education and a champion for every child,” his resolution states.

Area 12 Director of the New York State School Board Association, Catherine Romano, and Executive Director of the Nassau-Suffolk School Boards Association, Bob Vecchio, were both on hand at the meeting and spoke about Mr. Langstaff. 

“Fred lived serving Sayville purple and gold,” Ms. Romano said. 

Mr. Vecchio concurred. “Fred was the epitome of a servant leader. He served others all the time.” 

Mr. Langstaff’s wife Deb was also at the meeting and accepted the resolution from Board of Education President Thomas Cooley along with a plaque.

 

John Verdone Recognized

Former BOE President John Verdone was recognized by the BOE.

Former Sayville Board of Education President John Verdone was recognized with a resolution from the Board of Education. 

Mr. Verdone served the school district and the students of the Sayville Public Schools for twenty years as a Board Trustee and ten of those years as President. 

All of the members of the Board of Education who were at the meeting spoke about how Mr. Verdone was a mentor to them and how they were inspired by his passion and drive to help children. 

“This is a great community and it broke my heart to leave,” Mr. Verdone said. “I may live someplace else, but my heart is always going to be in Sayville.”

 

Alternate All-State Musicians

According to Sayville Music Department Chairperson, Mr. Ari Kramer, thousands of musicians audition every April and May in order to be selected for the All-State ensembles.

Emily Helbock was accepted into the Orchestra program for French Horn.

 Brandan Mazzullo had the opportunity to audition for two ensembles; the Band Ensemble and the Jazz Ensemble. Brandan was accepted into the prestigious Jazz Ensemble where there is only one person per part, as well as the Band Ensemble. He joined the Jazz Ensemble.
