Congratulations to Sayville High School senior Ash Hart!

Ash was awarded a $1,000 scholarship from the South Bay Art Association as part of the 28th annual Nita Elder Student Scholarship Exhibition.

The Student Scholarship Fund offers scholarship opportunities to high school students aspiring to pursue a career in visual arts and education. This year, a total of 20 students from 9 high schools across Suffolk County submitted their work, which was reviewed by two esteemed judges who awarded three $1,000 scholarships.

The piece is an abstract self-portrait Ash did for an AP Art summer assignment. Taking inspiration from the likes of Jean-Michel Basquiat along with a hint of tribal or caveman-era paintings, the portrait is intended to look unisex.

“My dad is an instrumental aspect of my artistic career, and he helped me figure out how to create a linoleum print for this project,” Ash said.

"I couldn't be more proud of Ash,” said Mr. Evan Hammer, Ash's art teacher. “He is a wonderful student who has developed into a fine artist. Over the past four years there have been many struggles to find "it", but through perseverance and dedication to the craft, they have finally broken through.”
