High School Students Attend Breast Health Workshops
April 5, 2024
On Wednesday, March 27, instead of participating in their normal gym class, girls at the high school attended a breast health workshop in the library hosted by the Maurer Foundation.
Organized by Ms. Jennifer Wittman-Cahill, the workshops taught students about breast cancer myths, uncontrollable risk factors, as well as lifestyle factors that drastically reduce the risk of being diagnosed with breast cancer.
Ms. Wittman-Cahill began inviting the Maurer Foundation to the High School in 1996.
“As a P.E. teacher, I was well aware of the dire need to educate our students about the extremely high percentage of women diagnosed with breast cancer,” Wittman-Cahill said. “Ironically, I was diagnosed in 2017, after 20 years of organizing this program at Sayville High School. While unfortunate for me, my diagnosis now allows me to speak to my students from an extremely personal experience, which I hope further impacts their knowledge and understanding of this illness. I am grateful to be able to use my diagnosis to enrich others' lives and to help young people do their best to prevent breast cancer in their own lives and the lives of their loved ones."
