Leaps of Fun at Cherry Avenue
March 5, 2024
Students in Mrs. Gallo’s kindergarten class at Cherry Avenue pondered what they would do with an extra day in the year.
It only made sense to make it a TOADALLY AWESOME one as they celebrated Leap Day on February 29.
“The students last had a leap year when they were just 1 or 2 years old, so I thought it would be a great opportunity to learn about it and incorporate S.T.E.A.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) activities into the day,” Mrs. Gallo said.
The kindergartners completed several challenges, which included stacking and balancing frogs on the rim of plastic cups, building and balancing lily pads on popsicle sticks, strengthening fine motor skills by transferring “frogs” between lily pads with chopsticks.
Other activities included a frog scavenger hunt where the class located 100 frogs and placed them on a number chart, building sight words using lily pad letters, and the class favorite…. LEAP frog jumping!
The class ended the day by sealing up a time capsule which Mrs. Gallo is looking forward to opening with her students in 2028!
It’s safe to say that these kindergartners had LEAPs of fun on this extra calendar day!
