Middle School Students Participate in Hackathon

March 18, 2024

Congratulations to the members of the Sayville Middle School Coding Club who participated in the annual Code Conquest (Hackathon) held by KidOYO at Hauppauge Middle School on Friday, March 15!

The event featured thirteen middle school teams from Nassau and Suffolk County competing in teams of up to eight students to claim territories on a map similar to the game Risk. This year’s game theme was the Oregon Trail.

The game play began with all teams having to complete quizzes to get through “gates” in order to claim territories. Sayville’s team, Syber Sayville, was one of six teams to complete all the gates on the Oregon Trail. At the end of the game, Syber Sayville had won three territories and earned 17 points to put the team in third place overall!

In addition, Syber Sayville won first place for Best Capital Defense Project, a huge achievement for the rookie team! The Capital Defense Project was the only element that was created before the competition. The students received the mission on Monday morning and had until Thursday morning to submit their project. For their submission, the team used Hatch (Scratch) and created a character to match each of them. The characters each had items they would travel the trail with and a backstory about who they were. Each character also had a mini-game that was playable.
