On the weekend of Friday, November 10, The Sayville Players premiered their performance of The Play That Goes Wrong.
In addition to their weekend shows, the cast put on a special performance for Cherry Avenue 4th Graders on Thursday, November 9. The elementary students loved the show and had the opportunity to chat with the cast and ask questions afterwards. The special visit was organized by Mrs. Kate Enea.
The show, borrowing from the “play-within-a-play” trope, follows the Cornley Polytechnic Drama Society as they put on a performance of the play The Murder at Haversham Manor.
From the start of the murder-mystery show, however, it was clear that things were not going to plan.
As the play progresses, the actors continuously run into disasters, including broken set pieces, forgotten lines and fellow cast members unable to continue the show.
So much of the success of the show relies on the cast's ability to make the planned staging appear like an accident that befell a confused actor. It is not an easy task but one that the Sayville Players succeed in accomplishing. The “mistakes” the cast of The Play That Goes Wrong accomplish are hilarious and a master-class in physical comedy.
