Students Address Serious Concerns

At this year’s annual Model United Nations conference, Sayville Sophomore Eric Stenzel earned an Honorable Mention for his insightful discussion. He was among the six Sayville High School students participated with student delegates from other Long Island schools in the three-day event hosted at Hofstra University.

Learning about the African Union’s vision to create "an integrated, prosperous and peaceful Africa, driven by its own citizens and representing a dynamic force in global arena," the Hofstra Model UN Conference delegates “debated and attempted to resolve issues relating to instability and problems of governance in the Federal Republic of Somalia, a long standing-problem that also affects surrounding countries such as Kenya and Ethiopia. During the Model UN conference, all the students engaged in rounds of negotiating, drafting, discussions, and research to seek resolutions to these important issues as well as healthcare in Africa, improvements in UN peacekeeping and the potential for a future war with Russia.

“Congratulations are in order for sophomore, Eric Stenzel,” Advisers LynnAnn Perlin  and Sabine Loriston announced,  “as he won Honorable Mention for his participation during the weekend.” Ms. Perlin added that “Eric represented Vietnam in Special Political and Decolonization Committee (SPECPOL). This was the second year for Eric and for other members Karl Stein, Harrison Bench, Sohum  Sheth, and Chris Pitre. This was the first year for Freshman Charles Burgardt. We are proud of all their efforts.”
