Well-Deserved Recognition for Three Sayville Students Working toward a Civil Society

Guided by the “Teaching Tolerance Anti-bias Framework” to create a just, equitable, and safe environment for all students, three Sayville High School students, Abby Good (12), Gena  Mizzi (12), and Cameryn Surdi (10), have been serving as Ambassadors with the Town of Islip. 

For years, this Ambassadors Program has been uniting students from school districts within the Town of Islip for the purpose of bringing awareness to all forms of bias and discrimination.

To acknowledge their outstanding efforts in building bridges across communities and creating a more civil society, Abby, Gena, and Cameryn were nominated by Sayville High School's Student Assistance Counselor Ms. Kahan and selected for the Students Building Bridges Award. They were among the twenty-six students from ten districts throughout Suffolk County recognized during the Suffolk County’s Yom HaShoah (Holocaust Remembrance Day) program held at Suffolk County Community College in Selden, NY.  The featured speaker at the ceremony was Hannah Robinson who shared her experience as a refugee from Nazi Germany whose life was spared by the Kindertransport program.

 “This award recognizes students who seek to reduce bias and discrimination within their schools and communities,” Ms. Kahan explained.  “As role models for their classmates, Abby, Gena, and Cameryn greatly deserve this recognition.” Ms. Kahan was proud of their accomplishments, delighted they were recipients of this Students Building Bridges Award and offered them her congratulations, the first of many congratulations these young ladies should be receiving from the community.
