For Earth Day, SHS Students Address Climate Crisis and Solutions

Climate Crisis and Solutions

Sayville High School’s Suffolk Student Climate Action Committee

Meets County Executive With Over 300 Signatures on Climate Action Petition

On Earth day, Sayville high school students from the Suffolk Student Climate Action Committee (SSCAC) and SWEEP club attended Islip Town’s Eco Carnival at Seatuck Environmental Center.  The students were geared up to talk about our climate crisis and its solutions, including urging the Town of Islip to go 100% renewable electricity by 2030.  Petition in hand, the students were successful at getting over 300 signatures in support.

Sophomore Harrison Bench took to the stage to introduce the Climate Action Committee, its mission and climate change issues on Long Island.  He wowed the crowd, who lined up to sign the petition in hopes of getting the attention of Islip Town officials to reduce Islip's CO2 emissions.

Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone and Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter stopped by to show their support with County Executive Steve Bellone asking to meet with the Suffolk Student Climate Action Committee next month to talk about their mission and campaigns.

The SSCAC has been fully supported by Sayville high school's SWEEP club and research teacher Maria Brown.  Thanks to their support, in just 5 weeks, this model SSCAC Chapter  that was created by Climate Reality leaders, Senior Chloe Gaconnier and resident Melissa Parrott has been wildly successful at urging climate change action with elected officials.
