Eleven Years of Filling Empty Bowls

Once again, the Empty Bowls fundraiser was a feast of tossed greens, all-you-can-eat homemade soups, and scrumptious deserts generously supplied by Sayville faculty, students, and families. For the price of a $10 ticket/donation, patrons were able to pick hand-crafted bowls—there was an artistic array of ceramics designed by the students and faculty—that were dish-washer and microwave safe while enjoying good food and great company.

The popularity of this event continues to grow. New this year was the Golden Flashes Café contribution by the Functional Academic and Career Development students who grew and harvested tomatoes, herbs and garlic from the High School Green House used in their delicious tomato soup. Homemade garlic croutons prepared by their teacher Mr. Phil Anzalone completed the dish.

Empty Bowls was sponsored by the art department under the direction of John Verschure, Debbie Urso, Jen Berotti, Evan Hammer, and in conjunction with the Sayville School Employees Charitable Foundation, and as part of National Hunger Awareness Month (October), this enjoyable gathering has been feeding more than just dinner guests for the past eleven years.

“We raised $1500 that will be donated to a local charity” Mr. Verschure explained adding that the chosen charity will be selected in a vote taken  by the student members of the Art Club.
