Former Vietnam War Army Nurse Visits Sayville History Club
Recently, Sayville resident, local VFW Post 433 member, and former Army nurse Joan Furey recounted her amazing experiences for the High School students in the Sayville History Club.
From 1969-1970, Mrs. Furey served with the Army Nurse Corps in Pleiku at the 71st Evacuation Hospital and worked in the Post-Op Intensive Care Unit. She was also the only woman featured in the Ken Burns and Lynn Novick PBS documentary series The Vietnam War. In addition, Mrs. Furey has co-edited Visions of War, Dreams of Peace which offers the important and overlooked perspectives of the women who served in Vietnam. History Club members, along with advisors Mrs. Hart and Mr. Pace, felt privileged to learn about Mrs. Furey’s experiences and thanked her, not only for her visit, but also for her incredible service to our country.
