Diving into a Cure for Breast Cancer

During Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Sayville-Bayport-Bluepoint Girls Varsity Swimming & Diving team hosted their Fourth Annual Breaststroke for Breast Cancer fundraiser at a fun-filled meet. For the one-dollar door donation, spectators not only enjoyed the diving and numerous swimming events, they could also purchase delicious home baked goods and raffle tickets for fine prizes.

Head Coach Nicole Mendez-Chicas worked with other coaches and volunteers to oversee all the activities that included Synchronized Diving, Two-Woman Breaststroke Relay, Breaststroke “pass the ball” Relay, Breaststroke T-shirt Relay, and the most fun for all, the Swimmers vs. Parents-Coaches Relay. Coach Andy and  Coach Nicole even participated in the events.  Andy dove in the synchronized diving and Nicole participated in the Swimmers vs. Parents-Coaches Relay.

“The energy on the pool deck was overwhelming,” Coach Mendez-Chicas said, “as the girls came together in their pink socks, bathing suits, shirts, and caps. It was a friendly competition that focused more on raising money than on individuals winning an event.  Together with the Girls Varsity Swimming and Diving teams from Smithtown and Connetquot-East Islip, we raised $1,338.30.  All proceeds went to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center for breast cancer research.”

With the success of this year’s event, Coach Mendez-Chicas and the members of the Girls Varsity Swimming & Diving team expect to host another, festive meet next year for this worthy cause.
