Doug Shaw Achieves National Board Certification
FROM THE NBCT WEBSITE:
“National Board Certification—the most respected professional certification available in K-12 education--has been designed to develop, retain and recognize accomplished teachers and to generate ongoing improvement in schools. Created by teachers for teachers, the National Board Standards represent a consensus among educators about what accomplished teachers should know and be able to do. Board certification is available in 25 certificate areas spanning 16 disciplines from Pre-K through 12th grade.
The certification process requires that teachers demonstrate standards-based evidence of the positive effect they have on student learning in alignment with the Five Core Propositions. They must exhibit a deep understanding of their students, content knowledge, use of data and assessments and teaching practice. They must also show that they participate in learning communities and provide evidence of ongoing reflection and continuous learning.”
Congratulations to Sayville High School English Teacher Doug Shaw who has become the first Sayville teacher to achieve National Board Certification. The rigorous program to gain board certification took Shaw two and a half years to complete. “The National Board process was arduous,” he said. “It really made me think carefully and reflect on what, how and why I do what I do in my class. I am grateful for the support that I received from the other teachers in the Sayville cohort, whom I look forward to congratulating when they complete their certification.”
To fund the cost of the program, Shaw was awarded an Albert Shanker Grant that also provides funds to the district to support the other teachers who are currently working towards National Board Certification. We look forward to recognizing all who successfully complete this challenging and worthwhile goal.
