For Sayville Art and Art History Students, Vincent van Gogh’s Starry Night Begins a Glorious Day

Sayville High School Art students enjoyed a glorious field trip to the Patchogue Theatre where they attended a showing of the production Vincent and went on a walking tour of Downtown Patchogue’s Walkway to the Arts, a trip made possible thanks to funds raised by our National Art Honor Society.
Vincent was a “one-man play, written by Emmy nominated actor Leonard Nimoy, which explores the little known side to Vincent van Gogh.” It was co-produced with Patchogue Arts Council and ran for a limited time at The Patchogue Theatre as their “very first educational program.”
After the impressive production, the Sayville students participated in a group discussion about van Gogh’s life led by Patchogue Arts Council member and Director of Programming John Cino. In addition, actor James Schultz fielded questions, such as what it’s like to be an actor in a one-man production. “The room was filled with a buzz,” said Art Department Chairperson Deb Urso, “the students were thoroughly engaged.”
Following the theatre production, the students went on a walking tour of one of Long Island’s first Artist Districts. The Sayville students’ tour was led by “one of our many amazing teachers in this district,” Ms. Urso said with pride. She was referring to Sayville High School Art teacher and Patchogue Arts Council Board trustee, Jennifer Berotti who, throughout this tour, “shared her knowledge of the local arts and all the Artists’ opportunities.”
As a community and arts council member, Ms. Berotti guided the Sayville students from the theatre on Main to the gallery on Terry Street along the walkway filled with community artist’s murals and pavers sponsored by PAC.

“We ended our day with a private gallery tour from MS. Berotti herself,” Ms. Urso shared her enthusiasm for the wonderful excursion. In the current exhibit, “Drawing Obsessions, students were able to make connections between the show, the walk, and the gallery exhibit. It really was a wonderful experience for our students. We are very lucky to have Ms. Berotti as a part of our staff, and this experience of bringing a sense of understanding how people and students can be a part of community was priceless. We, as educators, are asked to help nurture young adults into being educated and responsible members within our community; this experience has exemplified this. Our students were educated in what an arts council can do to help educate and beautify a community. They experienced the work of local artists and could see firsthand the artist opportunities that are made available through local community organizations like PAC.”
Enthusiastic about the overall field trip experience, Ms. Urso extolled the high points of Sayville’s Art Department, including the new course offering of AP Art History—“Art History is not only the past but the present”—taught by Ms. Berotti, as well as “the several immersive experiences traveling to Prague, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Museum of Modern Art, and Patchogue Theatre-Gallery, to name a few….We are so proud to offer this education and opportunities to the students of Sayville thanks to our staff and community members like Ms. Jennifer Berotti.”
SAVE THE DATE: Saturday, May 11, between 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sayville Art students from K-12 will host their own community event to showcase amazing artwork at the upcoming Annual All District Art Show. Open to the public with prizes and awards for student and raffles and activities for guests.
