Full S.T.E.A.M. Ahead with R.I.S.E. Tech students
This year for the first time, Sayville sent two teams to the Next Generation Long Island STEAM Competition: Engineering Design Challenge held at the Cradle of Aviation Museum, Garden City. R.I.S.E. Tech Students Keira Mizzi, Emily Parsowith and Brieanna Baldante presented their project Advanced Prosthetic Design: Focusing Finger Dexterity Through Joint Enhancement and Liam Davidson, Samir Patel and Ihtesham Khan presented their project titled Geofencing Locations to Improve the Safety Outcomes of Individuals at Risk of Elopement. “Both teams had great projects and presented their work professionally and enthusiastically,” said Sayville’s R.I.S.E. Tech Teacher (Research in Science and Engineering Technology) Rick Caskey, adding, “Davidson, Patel, and Khan won Second Place out of thirty-two participants,” and were awarded a prize of $300.00. Their project was the culmination of three year’s work, developing and coding a device that provides the “Geo Location of at-risk individuals and alerts caregivers to their location using cellular and GPS Technology.”
“This is the second time this year that the group [Davidson, Patel, and Khan] earned Second Place for this research project,” Caskey reported. Sayville had also participated for the first time in the Fourth Annual S.A.A.W.A. (South Asian American Women’s Alliance) Science Fair in March, where their project earned Second Place. Recently, the S.A.A.W.A. Science Fair award ceremony held in May awarded the Sayville students a cash prize of $150.00. “The team is a great example,” Caskey remarked with pride, “of what makes our R.I.S.E. Tech program excellent.”
