High School Celebrates el Día de los Muertos

“For our high school celebration,” Señorita Julia Sergison reported, “my class celebrated with their very own ofrenda on a typical altar. It was decorated with velas y cempasúchiles, the vibrant candles and fragrant marigold flowers that help guide the souls home. Also on the altar were water, bread, and salt to provide drink, food, and purification to the soul after such a long journey. Students discussed not only the meanings of each component of the ofrenda, but also what the holiday means for those who celebrate it. Día de los Muertos was not only a joyous day of cultural learning in the classroom, but is a joyous celebration for remembering the happiest memories and favorite things of our dear departed loved ones.”
