Sayville Senior Art Student Ava Herrera takes home Award of Excellence
At the 12th Annual Art League of Long Island’s Go APE Exhibition in which 200 artworks were on display, Sayville Senior Ava Herrera was one of eight art students to receive the Award of Excellence. A student in Mr. Evan Hammer’s AP class, Ava was thrilled that her painting of a floral arrangement earned this award.
In a recent statement, Ava explained her artistic philosophy:
Since I was young, I have always had a deep connection to nature and responsibility to share its beauty and to protect it. I am inspired by the various different shapes and colors that can be found in its endless variety of forms.
I strive to capture the beauty in the moment that I am viewing the subject matter into my work by focusing on light and perspective. I have been concentrating on flower stands that I have come across in cities around the world including London, Paris, and New York. I enjoy the way the bright hues and soft shapes of the flowers juxtaposed with the angular and dark aspects of the city. Flower stands and parks in the city are ways to stay connected with the natural world amidst the hustle and bustle of city life that is important to human wellbeing.
Mr. Hammer wishes to recognize Ava along with the rest of the Sayville artists who qualified to showcase their works: Rosalie Angelillo "Halo Effect"- Ink, Lillian Schweikert “Roots” -Digital, Kayla Hill "Confliction" - Linoleum Print.
