The RHO KAPPA Honor-Society Induction Recognizes Social Studies Students

RHO KAPPA Social Studies Honor Society is the only national organization for high school juniors and seniors that recognizes excellence in the field of Social Studies. Any accredited public or private high school can apply for a local chapter, through which individuals will be inducted into Rho Kappa Honor Society. Rho Kappa provides national recognition and opportunities for exploration in the social studies. Through its sponsorship of Rho Kappa, NCSS hopes to encourage an interest in, understanding of, and appreciation for the social studies. RHO KAPPA, is taken from two words Semitic origin. RHO is derived from “resh” meaning “head” and KAPPA is derived from “kapf” which means “palm of the hand.” Both these terms symbolize our firm belief that knowledge without service is useless.
At the recent 2019 RHO KAPPA Induction ceremony, an honor society that acknowledges excellence in Social Studies, the following Sayville High School students were inducted: Karl Stein, Taylor Maddy, Lauren Flaumenhaft, Tara Donohue, Hailey Decker, Connor Brennan, and Charles Burgardt (inducted but not pictured was Jack Dunn). Following the traditional candle-lighting ceremony with white, green, gold, and blue candles, Sayville’s RHO KAPPA advisors Mrs. Susan Hart and Mr. Michael Pace celebrated their students’ achievements at a light reception.
Since 2015, Sayville High School has been a chaptered member of the RHO KAPPA which is supported by the National Council for the Social Studies and The National History Club. Sayville High School’s annual honor society induction “is a great opportunity to recognize students who have a strong interest in the social sciences,” Mr. Pace noted. “Many of these students actively promote a civil discussion about the important issues in society today.”
