Yoga Introduced at Girls Volleyball Training

Sayville Girls Volleyball Teams Benefit from Yoga Session

For the Sayville Girls Varsity and JV Volleyball teams, the season begins with rigorous training sessions to prepare the players for the upcoming competitions. While the athletes are committed to being physically fit, the coaches know the importance of training not only the physical but the mental game as well.

“We, as a coaching staff,” Coach Deb Urso explained on behalf of James McLoughlin,” feel strongly about training the whole athlete.” It’s important to teach the girls, Urso continued, “how to relax the mind and body when the pressures of the game and life intensifies. Student athletes need as many tools as possible; they are growing up in a time that places many stressors on their teenage lives.”

That’s why the coaches invited Yoga instructor Gina Bariola to introduce the girls to the centering benefits of Yoga at a special evening practice session.  “We had an amazing and peaceful night. As they stretched their bodies both mentally and physically” Coach Deb Urso said, “the girls learned breathing exercises, balance, strength, and meditation.  Yoga instructor Gina led them through some meditative practices to help them balance their minds, ways to cope when the pressure of the game or school is barreling down on them. It was a great opportunity for team bonding.  She taught the team do partner poses that filled the room with laughter, pride and great memories.  We were also joined by volleyball alumni from 2018! This night was great for all involved, and we are looking forward to a great season! “

Mark your calendars for the upcoming Dig Pink fundraiser event at the game Sayville vs Hauppauge, scheduled for Oct 11.
