Class Spirit Builds for Homecoming 2019

Blasting the sirens to herald the 2019 Annual Homecoming Parade, the Sayville Fire Department truck led the way down Main Street on October 19. Members of the Sayville Rotary Club, the Sayville Teachers Association, the Sayville Varsity, Junior Varsity and Middle School cheerleading squads, and youth-football/cheer organizations marched behind the truck and were welcomed by cheering crowds. But the biggest attractions of the annual parade were the colorful and creative Homecoming floats.

The Sayville High School classes—energized by spirit-building activities all week—rose to the challenge to show class spirit by selecting a Disney Movie theme for their float and a charity for raising funds. The Freshman Class motored by in Cruella de Vil’s car for 101 Dalmations, the Sophmores rode on a wave with Moana, the Juniors opened their toy chest and their hearts for their Toy Story theme, while the Seniors showed tremendous passion as they danced along on their High School Musical stage.

All this enthusiasm didn’t just happen. It was the culmination of School Spirit Week during which the students wore class colors, dressed up for the daily themes (Twin Day, Tropical Tuesday, USA Wednesday, Disney Day Thursday, Sayville Pride Friday in conjunction with “Our Day to Give”) and painted the café windows to represent their Disney movies as well as their adopted charities. The classes campaigned on behalf of: The Good Foundation (Freshman), Nat’l Suicide Prevention Hotline (Sophomores), Friends of Sayville (Juniors), and St. Jude’s Hospital (Seniors). Having a worthy cause to champion gave the students extra incentive to compete. All week, student participation points were tallied in the social studies classes and posted by the café each day.

The Pep Rally, held on Friday, October 18th in the gym was a thunderous show of spirit: the High School band underscored the activities, the Senior Chorale members sang the National Anthem, the Fall Sports teams performed skits, and the faculty-vs-students tug-o- war had the crowds in a roar. The kings, queens, and courts were also announced.

New this year was the first Annual Sayville Pride Pasta Party held on the eve of Homecoming. It unified the classes in a celebration with food and fun for all, including musical entertainment supplied by streaming. Each student club provided a pasta dish and bread; student government supplied the paper goods and Anchor Club supplied the beverages.  

“Our first annual Sayville Pride Pasta Party, on Friday night before homecoming, was a huge success,” reported Student Government Advisor Katherine Van Dorn. “Club and Class presidents signed up in advance to bring food and that night we had several types of pasta, with mac and cheese being the favorite, meatballs, salad and cookies.  The NAHS (National Art Honor Society) decorated the cafeteria with purple and gold balloons dangling from the ceiling, which students enjoyed while they took a break from building their floats and practicing their skits to relax, eat, listen to music, and chit-chat. Rather than charge an admission to the SPPP, we asked for donations and we ended up with $340, divided among the four classes for each adopted charity.”

And then on Homecoming Saturday, the day of the parade, the students turned out in numbers to support their class. On the football field, the pregame skits and dance routines were performed by the Freshman class and the Sophomores. During half time, the Juniors and the Seniors had their time in the spotlight.

After the judges from the Sayville Rotary viewed Homecoming floats, student participation, and skits, they rendered their decision. The results landed the Juniors in first place, followed by the Seniors, Freshmen, and the Sophomores. Special congratulations go to all the students and class advisors who made School Spirit Week and Homecoming 2019 a great success. Remaining undefeated, the Sayville Flashes brought home another football victory with a final score of 49-12, against Harborfields.
