“Balloons Over Cherry” starts a new Thanksgiving Day Tradition

Every year, the grand spectacular of the Macy*s Thanksgiving Day Parade launches the holiday season, but few think about how this tradition came about.

“The Macy*s Day Parade first began in 1924 and continues to thrill families today,” said Cherry Avenue kindergarten teacher Nina Gallo. Because the balloons “have become the trademark of the Macy*s Parade,” she, along with kindergarten teachers Mrs. Jeanette Georges, and Mrs. Fawn Silver engaged the students in a history lesson. After introducing the book Balloons Over Broadway by Melissa Sweet to their kindergarten classes, the teachers encouraged their students to imitate history.

“The students first designed their float on paper and then brought their creations to life using a shoebox to make a stage and backdrop,” Mrs. Gallo explained. “We thought it would be fun to celebrate and kick off the holiday season with a tradition that fills so many homes each year.”

With every kindergarten student participating, Cherry Avenue proudly launched their first ever “Annual Shoebox Float Parade!”
