Students Cheered On Their School Teams at the Volleyball Competition For Worthy Charities

FEB 2020

The roar of cheering students resounded in the High School gym, but this was not just for an ordinary High School student-sports competition. It was the Third Annual SAYVILLE-SERVING-SAYVILLE: Elementary Teacher/Staff Charity Volleyball Game. It gave elementary students and their families from all three elementary schools an opportunity to watch their faculty compete for several worthy causes: The Sayville School Employees Charitable Foundation and a food collection for the Sayville Food Pantry.

The excitement was palatable. Each team showed great enthusiasm and dug deep for school spirit as they blocked, passed and spiked the volleyball during the entertaining event.  “This year, each team won an equal amount of games,” said tournament organizer Amy Chaimowitz, Sunrise Drive physical education teacher, “so we had to figure out who won by the score: Lincoln Avenue came in First, Sunrise Drive Second, and Cherry Avenue Third.”

But the real winners were the charitable organizations. “The entry fee was either one dollar per person or a can of soup for the Sayville Food Pantry,” explained Chaimowitz. “We raised $1,039 and collected countless boxes of food.  The bleachers were filled with excited children cheering on their teachers.  This fundraiser would not have been successful without all of our teacher, staff, administrators, and student volunteers.  In the last few years we have raised approximately $3500.  All money is given to the Sayville School Employee Charitable Foundation.”

After this year’s fun fundraiser, everyone is looking forward to the Fourth Annual SAYVILLE-SERVING-SAYVILLE tournament next year.
