At the BOARD OF EDUCATION MEETING...
Lincoln Avenue
The following students were recognized for winning first prize in their grade level at the Lincoln Avenue Science Fair. They will be representing Lincoln Avenue at the Brookhaven National Labs Virtual Science Fair: Julianne Blanco – K; Mason Donohue – Grade 1; James Phillips – Grade 2; Mason Shivers – Grade 4; Jake Lennihan – Grade 5. Presented by Principal Christine Carlson and BOE Trustee John Verdone.
Sunrise Drive
These five students will be representing Sunrise Drive with their science fair projects at Brookhaven National Laboratories Elementary Science Fair in May. Vincent Ungaro – K; Colby Gavin – Grade 2; Connor Fedelem – Grade 3; Matthew Mercorella – Grade 4; Samantha Graziano – Grade 5. Presented by Principal Dr. James Foy and BOE Vice President Carl Cangelosi.
Sunrise Drive Music Student
Michael Costello was nominated for LISFA (Long Island String Festival Association) and he participated in their virtual Fiddle Workshop on March 6th.

Cherry Avenue
The following students were Cherry Avenue School Science Fair Winners will Cherry Avenue with their science fair projects at Brookhaven National Laboratories Elementary Science Fair in May. Catherine Croce – Grade 1; John Kreuscher – Grade 2; Daniel Friers – Grade 3; Michael Boyd – Grade 4; Timothy Holahan – Grade. 5. Presented by Principal Dr. Lisa Ihne and BOE Trustee Norm deVenau.
Also, Dr. Ihne announced that Jane Southworth (not present for her award) was recognized for being nominated and selected to participate in the Long Island String Festival Association (LIFSA) virtual Jazz/Improvisation Workshop.
Middle School
Eighth grade students who, earlier this year, took it upon themselves to organize a food drive to help stock the Sayville Panty and St. Lawrence Church were recognized. They are: Isabella Romanelli, Matthew Luffman, Adria Vargas, Lauren Smalley, Kaitlyn Monahan, John Alliegro, Michael Larrea, Christopher Spatenga, Efstathios Paloubis. Over the Spring Break, some of these students ran an Easter Food Drive as well. They are: Isabella Romanelli, John Alliegro, Adria Vargas, Liam Flanagan, Efstathios Paloubis. Presented by Middle School Principal Dr. Joseph Castoro and BOE Trustee Dr. James Bertsch, Jr.
High School Art Students
HIGH SCHOOL ART STUDENTS: Sarah Hauk received the Award of Excellence from the Art League of Long Island’s Go APE exhibit. James Herbst had his artwork accepted into the Heckscher Museum, Long Island’s Best Exhibit. Presented by Art Teacher Mr. Evan Hammer and BOE Trustee Thomas Cooley.
BOE Trustee Thomas Cooley Awarded
At the April 20, 2021 Board of Education meeting, Sayville Board of Education Trustee Thomas Cooley received the Board Achievement Award for his participation in the New York State Board Association’s leadership training program. Sayville Superintendent Dr. John Stimmel congratulated Mr. Cooley on his achievement.
