Finding Inspiration in Lady Liberty at Sunrise

Finding Inspiration in Lady Liberty at Sunrise

In response to a conversation between Sayville Board of Education Trustee Norm deVenau and Sunrise Drive Principal Dr. James Foy about the Statue of Liberty being an inspiration, Sunrise Drive's Fifth-grade art classes created inspired artwork.

“We discussed many facts about the Statue,” Sunrise Drive Elementary School Art Teacher Mrs. Jeanette Ainslie explained. “I was impressed at the students' prior knowledge as well as their recognition of her significance.

“Each student drew the head of the statue using pencil, then shaded using pen and ink. They added color by using watercolor pencils to achieve the green-blue color. After, each student designed their own wearable mask using fabric markers. Some designs were of team logos, cartoon characters, block letters, blended colors and patriotic symbols. Their artwork is proudly displayed in our hallways at Sunrise Drive.

“I have been the Art teacher for many of these Fifth-grade students since kindergarten. I am consistently impressed by their talent and creativity. The Fifth-grade students at Sunrise Drive Elementary School are a group that I will never forget.”
