Lincoln Avenue PTA Purchases Paraphrased S.T.R.I.D.E.S. Shirts for Students

In its inaugural year, the S.T.R.I.D.E.S.* program secured spirit-wear T-shirts with the theme "You Got This; We Got You." These T-shirts were thanks to a grant from the Great South Bay Coalition and have been worn by all Sayville staff to bolster the Sayville students’ social-emotional wellness. The message—selected pre-COVID—of solidarity and resiliency became especially apropos during the Pandemic of 2020.
To reinforce the traits of resiliency with the elementary students, the Lincoln Avenue PTA created a student-version of the shirt with the message "We Got This" and recently distributed them to all the students. It was a thoughtful gift which delighted everyone.
“The students at Lincoln Avenue would like to thank the Lincoln Avenue PTA for purchasing S.T.R.I.D.E.S. shirts for all the students,” Lincoln Avenue Principal Christine Carlson said. “The students are familiar with the Sayville S.T.R.I.D.E.S. curriculum and have seen faculty and staff wearing similar S.T.R.I.D.E.S. shirts this year. Students have now joined the fun of showing their commitment to focusing on the S.T.R.I.D.E.S. traits and characteristics by wearing their shirts every Friday.”
Student Services Director Jillian Makris, who coordinates the Social-Emotional Wellness programs within the District—including the S.T.R.I.D.E.S. shirts—was thrilled. "I loved seeing the Lincoln Avenue students in their S.T.R.I.D.E.S. shirts on Friday. From the very beginning, the intention of the shirts was to send a message of unity, support and resilience; specifically, that our students can overcome any challenge and that we would be there to support them every step of the way. Seeing our students in their shirts just reinforces that message even more so. It truly is a team effort and we walk hand in hand as a school, a District and a community." Mrs. Makris also expressed her thanks to the PTA for their generosity in procuring the shirts.
*The acronym of S.T.R.I.D.E.S. represented the important attributes that are “integral to personal happiness and success" which are: S elf-esteem, T rust, R esiliency, I ndependence, D iversity, E mpathy, S trength.
