Outside, in front of the Sayville Middle School, musicians gathered with their instruments. For the first time since the pandemic began last spring, Sayville’s Middle School Jazz Ensemble played in-person before a small audience. (For those who could not attend, it was live streamed.)
“We’re so excited that you’re here to join us,” Middle School Principal Dr. Castoro said as he welcomed family members and friends, including Superintendent Dr. Stimmel and Chairperson of Music, Mr. Hoffman, in attendance. “These concerts are the culmination of the hard work of our students, certainly our staff, but also all of you as parents, making them practice, making them rehearse, those hours that they spend at home pay off when we get an opportunity to see our students perform in an event like this.”
Conducted by Band/Jazz Director Kim Lattanzio the students five songs: Carnival Del Sol - James Swearingen, Flip, Flop, and Fly - Arr. Roger Holmes, Reunion in Rio- Peter Blair, The Final Countdown- Tempest/arr. Paul Lavender and Africa- Paich/Porcaro. “I was so incredibly proud of these musicians,” Mrs. Lattanzio said, “and the work they put into this performance despite the challenges we have faced this year due to the pandemic.”
