Sayville High School History Club Reinvents Veterans Day Tribute

Sayville High School History Club Practices Social Distancing While Honoring Veterans 

This year, for obvious reasons, the National History Club and Rho Kappa (Social Studies Honor Society) had to reinvent their traditional Veterans Day program.

“Instead of our annual breakfast,” said Club Advisor and Social Studies Teacher Susan Hart, “students organized a car parade to honor our local veterans from Post 433.” 

While some Club members met to decorate the parade cars in the high school parking lot, those of driving age followed Mrs. Hart's car through Sayville, West Sayville, and Oakdale to honor Veterans waiting on their lawns for the parade.  “Korean War Veteran Mario Politi, along with Vietnam War Veteran Joan Furey were among the familiar faces who were waiting to greet us! And History Club member Annie Bench was excited to drive by her grandfather, Robert Gifford's house,” Mrs. Hart continued noting that Sayville BOE trustee Dr. James Bertsch took the wheel for “his sophomore daughter Sophia so she could participate in the car parade.”

After the History Club car parade drove by Post 433, it ended at Sparrow Park where the Club members observed the Veterans Day laying-of-the-wreath ceremony.
