With Duffy Scholarship money, Lincoln Student Sets Up Little Lending Library

As the 2020 recipient of the annual Erin Halliday-Duffy Scholarship, Lily Phillips used her scholarship money to create a Little Library for the community to use. Lincoln Avenue Principal Christine Carlson attended the recent ribbon-cutting ceremony and captured a video of Lily's speech.

About the Erin Halliday-Duffy Scholarship
After a courageous battle with Cystic Fibrosis, Erin Halliday-Duffy passed away on August 31, 2007. She was only 28. Mrs. Halliday-Duffy taught at Lincoln Avenue Elementary School and lived every day to the fullest. Known for her love of life and interest in nature, Mrs. Duffy touched the hearts and minds of her students, both when she taught kindergarten and later third grade. Colleagues and students fondly recalled how Mrs. Duffy conveyed her joy for living and love of life through her lessons as well as by example. Students remembered being amazed by her yoga postures—including headstands—which she incorporated into the classroom as a healthy way to begin each morning. She never complained. She truly believed every day was a gift.
To keep Mrs. Duffy’s philosophy and spirit alive in the hearts of students who did not know her, a foundation and scholarship has been established in her name, and the Sunflower has become her symbol. Each year this scholarship has been awarded to a deserving Fifth-grader who embodies her same attributes.
