Volleyball Digs Deep for Dig Pink Breast-Cancer Awareness And Raises $2,500
The excitement in the gym was palpable for Sayville Varsity and Junior Varsity Girls Volleyball teams at their annual 2021 Breast Cancer Awareness Fundraiser—Dig Pink, a national fundraising effort, organized by The Side-Out Foundation and Suffolk County Girls Volleyball.
“The event was a huge success,” agreed Varsity Coach Deb Urso and JV Coach James McLoughlin, who is in his last year as Sayville JV coach couldn’t have been more elated with the outcome. Spectators complying with mask protocols came to cheer on the teams. Members from other Sayville’s school sports teams and students building floats for Homecoming attended to show their support. “We had many younger Volleyball players from our camp come to the game, Middle School players, and several Alumni players and families,” Urso said, adding, “Just to name a few, I saw the Ohoppe, Mergl, Goczan, Hanley, Acker, Spalma, Muscarello, and DePompeo families. We played against Miller Place. They are coached by Laura Horan and Nikki Spalma.” Coach Urso noted with pride that Nikki Spalma was a Sayville Volleyball Alumni and had been coached by both Urso and McLoughlin when she was a student here.
During the Volleyball game, the teams wore pink in synch with the Breast Cancer Awareness fund drive and donations were raised with the sale of Spirit Wear and raffles. “We raised over $2,500!!” Coach Urso enthused, recognizing the enormous support and generosity of the Sayville High School and Districtwide communities. In addition, Urso expressed her gratitude to the parents who donated basket items and gift cards from the local merchants (see below) for the raffles. Urso appreciated the help from the team members and their parents in organizing the event and gave special thanks to “our Team Mom Christina Law. She was great! We are lucky to have such amazing support from our families.”
Both JV and Varsity won their matches against Miller Place, thrilling their coaches and with all proceeds going to The Side-Out Foundation, Dig Pink 2021 was definitely a win-win situation in the fight against Breast Cancer.
