Remembering the Legacy of 9-11

Twenty Years Later

“Even though our students today,” Superintendent Dr. John Stimmel noted, “were not born during that time, we still want to honor those who we lost and honor those who served.” Dr. Stimmel listed the many ways Sayville students and staff throughout the District commemorated the Twentieth Anniversary of September 11:

• At all the schools there were moments of silence during the morning announcements to commemorate the twentieth anniversary.
• The High School’s Social Studies Department kicked off a two-day program to examine the timeline of that day and the impact of September 11 on the world. The students will also interview people who lived through that unforgettable day.
• The Middle School has been running a fundraiser entitled Heroes Among Us. All proceeds will go to the Tunnel to Towers Foundation.
• Individuals are writing cards with Messages of Remembrance to support 9-11 victims and also first responders. These note cards are posted on the cafeteria windows.
• Throughout the District everyone—including the elementary schools—was encouraged to weare red, white and blue to school.
• Each school had special displays regarding the event.

Assistant Middle School Principal Brian Decker shared the following message:

"As we embark on the 20th Anniversary of the events of September 11, 2001, Sayville Middle School wanted do something special to remind students what happened on that day and to explain the importance of never forgetting the sacrifices so many made on September 11th and the days, months, and years after. We created note cards for students to write a thought or message acknowledging the events of September 11th. Students, staff, and families who participated made a donation for every card that was made. All the proceeds from the fundraiser will be donated to the Steven Siller Tunnel to Towards Foundation. The Tunnel to Towers Foundation helps support victims of September 11th and families of all first responders that made the extreme sacrifice protecting the people of our great country. We will present a check with the money collected to a Tunnel to Towers Representative at the end of September. Sayville Middle School would like to thank all our students, staff, and families that contributed to this cause and we are proud to state that we were able to raise over $1,000.00 during the event."
