Sayville High School Gene Weng has been named a semifinalist in the 66th National Merit Scholarship Program. He is among the 238 Long Island scholars who achieved the semifinalist status from nearly 16,000 students nationwide who took the qualifying test for entry to the competition. As a semifinalist, Gene Weng has an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 7,600 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $30 million that will be offered next spring.

To be considered for the award, each semifinalist must fulfill several requirements to advance to the finalist level of the competition. Over 90 percent of the semifinalists are expected to be named finalists, and more than half of those finalists will win a National Merit Scholarship, earning the Merit Scholar title.

Sayville School District congratulates Gene on his accomplishment and wishes him success in his future endeavors.
