Sayville Middle School Cheerleaders took First Place on Sunday, December 5, 2021 at their first Section XI competition of the year. The competition was held at West Islip High School and included ten other teams: Shoreham Wading River, Great Hollow, Samoset, Nesaquake, Uniondale Road, Pat-Med, Hampton Bays, Gelinas, Amityville and Robert Frost Middle Schools.

“Our team has been working together since September,” remarked Middle School Cheerleading Coach Victoria Herrmann, “to learn skills in tumbling, jumps and stunting in preparation for creating a two-and-one-half minute routine for competition.”

Coach Herrmann explained that the Sayville Middle School cheerleading program practices five days a week—two of which are at Long Island Cheer, a local cheerleading gym where they are able to focus on improving tumbling and stunting skills. Many of these athletes put in countless hours after practice at dance, additional tumbling classes and even private lessons to focus on perfecting their skills.  “This past week our team faced many obstacles,”added Coach Herrmann, “including missing our Eighth graders who were on the Frost Valley trip, as well as injuries and illnesses on the team.” Despite all the obstacles in their way, the Middle School squad overcame every hurdle and performed an incredibly difficult routine at West Islip High School to secure their First Place finish.

“We are so proud of their teamwork!  This team has shown unity both on and off the mat,” Coach Herrmann added proudly. “These athletes truly care about one another and it shows in everything they do. They are more than a team, they are a family.”
